Exciting news for eye patients! We now have a state-of-the-art non-contact tonometer for measuring internal eye pressures. This instrument gives very accurate measurements which are used to determine if specific drugs are needed when presented with a painful, inflamed eye. You can imagine what it was like for the pet to use the instrument of old – topical anaesthetic was first instilled into the eye and then with restraint, a mechanical instrument was used to take readings by directly pressing onto the eye. This new tonometer takes readings with minimal restraint and no need to contact the eye at all.
Remember early diagnosis and proper treatment save eyes! The current recommendation is that all diabetics should have their pressures checked regularly and so should those pets with only one eye. Glaucoma can cause blindness in 24 hours
